On Friday, September 3, 2021, Buffalo cyclists will join riders from across the country to participate in a Miles for Hope event to honor of Sydney West.

Sydney was 19 years old when she vanished from San Francisco on September 30, 2020 – nearly one year ago.  Sydney disappeared during a stay with family friends in the San Francisco Bay Area shortly after leaving UC Berkeley in the middle of her first semester of college.  Her family has been searching for her ever since.

Sydney’s mother, Kimberly Kadzik West, hails from Buffalo and is a graduate of Amherst Central High School. “Once you’re a part of Western New York, you’re always a part of Western New York,” said the event organizer and local pastor, Steve Biegner.  Biegner is the captain of Miles for Hope Team Find Sydney West.

Participants from across the country will join the ride remotely, including in San Francisco, California, where Sydney was last seen and in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she grew up.  Collectively, they will cycle 2,800 miles, the distance between Sydney’s home in Chapel Hill and where she was last seen in San Francisco.

Sydney’s father, Jay West, will ride 100 miles alongside participants in Buffalo – her mother, Kimberly, will be riding in Chapel Hill where the family currently resides.
