UNIFORM OF THE DAY: Moisture managing light-weight kit.

ON TOP: A wicking base under your bike jersey and, to start, a rain jacket as the outer layer. You may also wish to have a bandana (du rag), beanie or cap. Bike gloves should be all you need on your paws.

BELOW THE WAIST: I’d go with bike shorts. HOLLAND PATENT – STITTVILLE FORECAST calls for mostly cloudy conditions. SO any rain we start with we should ride out of. You’ll also want your light-weight wool or synthetic socks.

AS ALWAYS: Have your RoadID, shades, sunblock, lip balm and a snack or two; two water bottles — one full with water; one with some sports drink — or more water if you’re bringing energy chews or “bloks” as snacks.

**HELPFUL TIP: TOSS A TOWEL, SOME WIPES AND SOmE DRY CLOTHES IN THE CAR. THEY’LL HELP YOU DRY OFF, WIPE OFF ANY OVER-SPRAY AND DRIVE HOME WITHOUT FEELING LIKE A DISCARDED SPONGE.

DON’T FORGET YOUR MEDS: If you use an inhaler or epi-pen, please have them with you. You may want to let one of our ERT’s know you have them aboard.

DON’T FORGET YOUR HELMET…IT’S A MUST!

— AND —

LIGHTS – FORE AND AFT; WE’LL BE UNDER CLOUDS AND, THOUGH ARRIVING BACK BEFORE SUNSET, MAY ENCOUNTER DARKER CONDITIONS THAN NORMAL.

Please have a spare inner tube, some tire levers and a means to inflate the tube should you need to use it. Remember to stop off your tires before arriving — check the sidewall but most of you will be looking for somewhere around 100 – 120 PSI. If you’re not sure about this part; please bring your pump in the car with you.

THE THOREAU:
Henry had a knack for making the best of whatever weather mother nature threw his way; noting on many occasions that if one were to always be seeking fair conditions they’d be spending a lot of time indoors. Mind you, he was perfectly happy sitting at his desk, watching the rain fall, but he longed to be outside and, each day ,found a way.

Here’s some perspective from WALDEN:

“We can never have enough of nature. We must be refreshed by the sight of inexhaustible vigor, vast and titanic features, the sea-coast with its wrecks, the wilderness with its living and its decaying trees, the thunder-cloud, and the rain.”

– Henry David Thoreau
from WALDEN
